Card Swaps
|
The Salem "local" above that bears this message was sent from Campbellsburg to Corea, Maine in 1944. (The card is from the same Tichnor Bros. set as the Salem lake local. For more see "Locals.") Messages like that appear on the back of several of the cards in this collection. Card swap clubs were evidently a popular activity. The message on the back of the Salem lake local says it all, and briefly: "Dear Mrs. May:- Here is a card for your collection and I would like to have one from you for my col. Your Big 4 friend, Mrs. Merle Brown, Salem, Ind. R5 No. 2466." It's interesting that all of these card swap missives are sent by women to women. It may have something to do with the isolated nature of rural living combined with access to communication through church and women's publications. At any rate, collecting postcards from club sisters obviously was a popular pastime. |
