Any one of Hay's many areas of accomplishment would make him an irresistable subject for critics and biographers -- poet, journalist, statesman, power broker. He was such an admired and important public figure that a two-volume biography and collection of letters was a popular best-seller after his death. And almost a century after his death the scholarship industry continues to mine his published works and the mountain of correspondence he created in his lifetime for academic gold.
Books related to John Hay include:
- "Lincoln and the Civil War in the Diaries and Letters of John Hay" by John Hay, Tyler Dennett (Editor), Henry S. Commager (Designer) -- This work has been criticized for its omission of key passages in the diaries, many of which are restored in the version of the diaries edited by Burlingame and Ettlinger, next on this list. (Published 1939, Dodd, Mead & Co. Reprinted 1998, Da Capo Press, ISBN 0306803402.) Dennett also wrote "John Hay: From Poetry to Politics." (Published 1933, New York: Dodd, Mead & Co.)
- "Inside Lincoln's White House: The Complete Civil War Diary of John Hay" edited by Michael Burlingame and John R. Tuner Ettlinger (Published 1999, Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, ISBN 0809322625 -- see link to a review below.)
- "Lincoln's Journalist : John Hay's Anonymous Writings for the Press, 1860-1864" by Michael Burlingame (Editor), John Hay (Compiler) -- see a publisher's blurb and a brief online review from Civil War Book News. (Published 1998, Carbondale: Southern Illinois Univeristy Press, ISBN 0809322056.)
(Burlingame, a professor at Connecticut college, is a one-man Lincoln/Hay scholarship factory. In addition to the two books above he has in process "Lincoln's Ghostwriter: The Letters of John Hay, 1860-1864," and a condensed version of "Abraham Lincoln: A History" by John G. Nicolay and John Hay. He is also working on a book about Lincoln's biographers, as well as many other projects.)
- "Life And Letters Of John Hay" (2 Volumes), by William Roscoe Thayer -- This work was a best-seller when it first appeared in 1915.
