Centennial History, by Warder W. Stevens

Second CourthouseThe quintessential work on the history of Washington County and Salem is Warder W. Stevens Centennial History of Washington County Indiana Her People Places and Institutions.

The book was published in 1916 (it missed the Salem centennial by a couple of years) as the capstone to the career of one of Washington County's most able and interesting citizens. The autobiographical sketch that he included in the history is brief and modest for a man who had so many careers and interests -- lawyer, politician, farmer, scientist, capitalist. One of his most enduring contributions to the community was his daughter, Warda Stevens Stout, who made a large donation in her father's honor to foster the Stevens Museum.

The Stevens history was reproduced in the 1970s, and Warder Stevens' abilities as journalist and amateur scientist still shine through its pages.

(The photograph of the second Washington County Courthouse above comes from a prospectus for the history, a promotional piece issued by the publisher, B. F. Bowen of Indianapolis -- as does the portrait of Stevens that appears with his biography.)(10/21/01)
