Salem, Indiana through One Hundred Fifty Years 1814-1964

Sesquicentennial HistoryIn 1964, Salem celebrated its sesquicentennial (that's 150 years, halfway between a centennial and a bicentennial). The General Chairman for the event was D. Jack Mahuron, and under his guidance, with contributions from many local historians, experts and civic leaders, the Sesquicentennial produced a brief history in the form of a 56-page pamphlet titled "Salem, Indiana through One Hundred Fifty Years 1814-1964."

The cover carried a seal designed for the event that bore the legend "Hewn from the Wilderness" and highlighted Salem's role in culture, education, and religion. The contents included material on the history of Salem and many of its institutions -- the Courthouse, churches, schools, the Public Library, the first railroad, the history of the community's doctors and hospital, newspapers, radio, and industry.

The work was updated for the dodrasquicentennial (that's the 175th anniversary of the town) in 1989. (4/23/01)
