History of Washington County Indiana, 1916 - 1976

The Washington County Historical Society produced this large-format, work more than 600 pages in length, beginning where the Stevens History left off and bringing it up to date. Ruby Williams, then president of the society, wrote in the introduction, "We have tried to include incidents and unusual occurences which have become almost forgotten; the great changes which have taken place in transportation, medicine, agriculture, and lifestyle. The first half of the book is devoted to this local history, and the last half to family biographies. . . ." Geneological information is one of the primary missions of the society, so the sketches are heavy on family detail. The first half of the book is devoted to chronicling the public institutions -- libraries, schools, churches, the press, and more -- and setlements of the county. The volume includes many photographs. (10/21/01)
