First Baptist Church, Salem, Indiana

The First Baptist Church changed very little -- at least outwardly -- in the half-century between 1910 or '12, when C. U. Williams photographed his first Baptist Church card and the mid-1960s, when this photograph was taken. This card in numbered H8H in the L. L. Cook Co. series. Like the Methodist Church and West Market Street cards it is unused, so it doesn't do much to help establish a date for the series, except that it provides another automobile for dating.

The Chevrolet parked on High Street in front of the church in this card is a 1965 model, according to an email from Willy Star Marshall -- which qualifies him as the newest honorary member of the Board of Historical Consultants to brockcreek.com. (The license plate number, incidently, is 88A-225 or 88A-226. The level of detail in real-photo images is much greater than half-toned cards.)

The signboard also might help date the photograph. It reads, "First Baptist Church, Fred L. Adams, Pastor" and announces that Sunday services are at 10:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., with mid-week fellowship Wednesday at 7 p.m. (12/11/01)
