John Hay House, Salem, Indiana

Somewhere in the decades after 1909, the John Hay Birthplace acquired a marker in the front yard and a side porch. (See the John Hay House cards of the 1900s and the 1970s. And if you're interested, there's quite a bit more about John Hay.)

This is the third version of this card, published by Apple's Drugs. The first version was published in 1931 for the Robertson Drug Co.. The second version carried no publisher or distributor credit.

The Apple's Drugs set

The third version of the set was sold by Apple's Drugs on the square in Salem (now the Salem Apothecary, 3 Public Square). All are black-and-white halftone printed images (rather than photographic prints) identified on the back as "C.T. Photo-Finish" cards. These cards all say "Distributed by Apple's Drugs, Salem, Ind." on the back left edge:

There were apparently at least 11 cards in this set, four of them originally published in 1931 (this picture, a view of the courthouse, and views of the Methodist Church and the Carnegie Library), and at least seven more credited to Boyd Smedley that carry Curt Teich production numbers dating them to 1952 (the High School, Beck's Mill, and aerial views of De Pauw Park, Crown Hill Cemetary, Lake Salinda, the town center, and the hospital).

This card was purchased at Apple's Drugs on July 5, 1980 -- but the cards had probably been for sale in Apple's for at least two decades before that.

Interestingly, the John Hay House is the only card in the series to carry a descriptive caption on the back:
