Beck's Mill, Built 1808, Washington County, Indiana

"The spring was discovered by Geo. Beck Jr. in December 1807. A rock wall was built in 1832 across entrance of cave to impound the water which is used to furnish power to run the mill," says the caption on the back of this card. (For a similar view in color, see the Historical Society card from the 1970s.)

The card and the next one are both unmailed and undated, and I've put them into the "1940s" category mostly because I don't know where they actually belong. They were published by E. C. Kropp Co., Milwaukee, Wis. This card carried two identifiers, "(IJA)" and "8773N". There is no indication of date. (If Kropp employed a numbering scheme that would let you derive a date from the number, as Curt Teich and, indirectly, Tichnor Bros., did, I don't know about it.) It is a "linen" card -- the paper has matte fabric finish that looks like linen, typical of cards published in the 1930s and 1940s. (11/19/02)
