Bank of Salem Building, Salem, Indiana

The Bank of Salem was founded by the Sinclair family. The view of their home shows a domestic building in the center, with the bank on the left and an apartment building on the right. By the time of this series of cards the Sinclairs had decamped and turned the residence into an imposing white bank structure. The bank had moved from next door and turned its space over to the Post Office.

By the early 1950s when I was old enough to remember it the State Bank of Salem occupied both the left and middle structures -- the post office had moved off the square. And in the last three decades the State Bank of Salem has gone through at least three name changes and six down-sizings as a result of mergers as far removed from Salem, Indiana, as the dark side of the moon.
