Millport Knob, Salem, Indiana

This view of the road through the Millport Knobs has a double link to the Northeast side of the square: It's also manufactured by Cosmos, and it features Neal's Soda Fountain. It was probably made to be sold over the counter at Neal's.

The view looks more like Brown County than Washington County -- a log cabin on one side of the road, a barn and a cow or two on the other, and a wagon stopped in front of the house while the driver has a chin wag with the four people standing in the yard. The caption says "One of the turns." There were many. You can still experience it -- turn left off the new, smooth, straightened State Road 135 onto Old 135 at the top of the Knobs going north, and twist and turn all the way down to the Muscatatuck bottoms. If you do, you may even drive by this barn, which eighty years ago said, "Stop at Neal's Soda Fountain When Thirsty. Salem, Ind. North Side Square." As with the other view of the Knobs, I suspect the car parked next to the barn belonged to the photographer, but it's probably a different photographer, because it's a different car.

This card appears through the generosity of a fellow collector of Salem cards, Michael Morris. Hi, Mike, and thanks! (10/16/01)
