Washington Township High School, Salem, Indiana

Like the preceding view of the Court House, it has the same black-letter typeface as the label on the 1908 Art Mfg. cards. It also has the same overprinted blue sky. But the fancy back-slanted caption evidently written on the print in india ink and numbered 3195 has no counterpart in any of the Art Mfg. or C. U. Williams cards. So I'm at a loss. It was probably printed as part of the same set of cards as the Court House view, but what that set might be, or who the publisher might be, I have only the back design as a clue.

The photograph of the high school is the same one used for the Tresslar high school card of about the same period. It shows the school building in about the same state of finish as the "Red Back" view.

This card was mailed from Salem on August 28, 1911. It is addressed to Mr. Russell Bailey, 47 Sherman St., Richmond, Ind., in a flourishing hand, and text in a tiny cramped hand fills the message half of the divided back with a message that hints at unrequited love, or just loneliness: "Hello, Kid. How are you these times? You bet I long to see R. Yesterday I was so lonesome. Did you see Ethel yesterday? What are you working at these times? Are you going out to the Glenns any this week? I would like to be with you. Did you see Gray yesterday. You know what I told you and what you promised when we parted that night. Do you. Say, you must answer this soon for I want to know how you are all getting along. Answer soon. I will write more next time. W. C. Wingler, Salem, Ind., R. R. 5, Box 54." (3/31/03)
