Washington County Courthouse (Winter), Salem, Indiana

This card, like the four preceding it, is a "real photo" post card -- a photographic print on paper stamped on the back with a post card layout. This imprint doesn't match the one on the preceding view of the Courthouse, or the Beck's Mill Road card. There's no other visual or textual information that would help attribute or date the card, beyond the obvious -- it's a divided-back card, which puts it after 1907, and there are three horse-drawn rigs in the picture but no motor vehicles, so it's probably before World War I.

The picture shows the courthouse from the south. It was taken about 11:17 a.m. on a winter day that was perhaps above freezing: The light snow has melted in the buggy tracks near the curb at the lower right of the picture. Someone with a closer knowledge of the seasons on the town square might be able to take a guess at the month by comparing the time of day to the shadows thrown by the columns on the courthouse porch.

There is a cannon on a pedestal to the left of the gateway, which might also help date the card. Another courthouse card, postmarked 1908, shows an almost identical view of the building, but no cannon. The trees in the 1908 picture are also considerably smaller. (9/20/99)

A second copy of this view has a Defender back, which the real-photo reference page dates 1920-1945 -- a few years later than I'd date this photograph. (6/1/02)
