This very early view of the Presbyterian Church shows thick growth of ivy on the building. The house to the right was the manse for the church until it was replaced by a classroom addition in 1959. The house to the far right is where the Post Office now stands. This card is unused, and has an undivided back.
The Sesquicentennial History says that Salem's Presbyterians organized a congregation in 1817, and for a year held nondenominational services in the Courthouse. They built Union Church on North High Street. In 1821 this church split -- 15 members founded Franklin Church, near Canton. The remaining members became Salem Presbyterian Church. The church on High Street dates to 1840, so it was old even when this photograph was taken at the turn of the century. (1/26/01)
