Elementary School, Salem, Indiana

The building is identified as the "Graded School" in the caption and numbered "716 Hand Colored." The view of the Elementary School is taken from almost exactly the same position as the photograph used for the Souvenir Postal view -- slightly higher and to the left.

The Art Manufacturing series

This card is part of a series made by the Art Mfg. Co., Amelia, O., according to the back of the card. The Art Manufacturing Company appears to to have bought photographs from C. U. Williams and other sources to produce this set. The views of East Market Street and South Main also appear in the C. U. Williams series. The view of the library is the same one used for the Souvenir Postal card. Some of these do have some applied color (though "hand colored" may be stretching the truth), but others -- the library and courthouse -- do not. These Art Manufacturing cards are in the collection:

  • 716 -- Graded School, Salem, Ind.
  • 717 -- East Market Street, Salem, Ind.
  • 718 -- Carnegie Library, Salem, Ind.
  • 719 -- South Main Street, Salem, Ind.
  • 720 -- Washington County Court House, Salem, Ind.

The set was published after 1905 (the date of the library completion) and probably before 1908 (at least so far I haven't found a view of the High School, which was dedicated that year). Whether there are additional cards in the set is unknown -- there probably are, because five is an odd number for a set of cards, and at least one other major landmark, the John Hay house, is missing.

This card has not been stamped or mailed, but it is addressed to "Little Francis House, Sellersburg, Ind." and the message space is endorsed, "Ella H., Salem, Ind." (8/28/99, 6/12/03, 2/12/04)
